The Padres will wrap up a long homestand tonight and tomorrow with a truncated two game set against the Colorado Rockies.
Joey Lucchesi (3-2, 2.98 ERA) will get the start for the Padres and will face off against the same Rockies pitcher he’s faced when playing against Colorado in Tyler Anderson. Lucchesi has been one of the lone bright spots for the Padres rotation: he still leads the team in wins. Lucchesi is also leading the MLB rookie pitcher pack in ERA and is second in innings pitched, opponents’ batting average (.222), and strikeouts (46 in 42 1⁄3 innings). Lucchesi has also apparently gone to the Clayton Richard school of pickoffs, picking off 2 runners in his last action and 3 overall, which also leads the Majors. Lucchesi will go into tonight’s contest without having yielded an earned run against the Rockies (he’s allowed 2 unearned runs in 11 innings against Colorado).
Tyler Anderson (2-1, 4.23 ERA) has been okay-ish in his last few starts but carries a 4.50 ERA so far in May. On the flip side Anderson has been very good against the Padres, boasting a 1.50 ERA against San Diego. In 12 innings of action against the Friars Anderson has only yielded 2 runs. The Padres will be looking to counter his success with the debut of power-hitting Franmil Reyes, due to start tonight in right field. Carlos Asuaje has been sent back to El Paso in the corresponding move.
Let’s see if the Padres can make it 3! Tonight’s contest starts up at 7:10 PM.
