Taking the ball for the Padres will be Clayton Richard who will have the benefit of pitching against a Rockies team hitting a skid not unlike the Padres. The Rockies will head into the series against San Diego after dropping 2 of 3 to the visiting Atlanta Braves, going a familiar 3-18 with runners in scoring position (The Padres were 0-15 with RISP in their last two games). The Rockies hit an underwhelming .225 and only scored 6 runs in that last series, a turn of fortune from their 19 runs scored while in San Diego. Richard will have to hope their sleeping bats don’t wake in his turn at the mound: Clayton sports a 1-5 record in 9 starts at Coors with a 8.82 ERA. His last appearance against the Rockies in San Diego was one to forget: he allowed 5 runs on 8 hits in 5 IP.
The Rockies will send Jon Gray to face the Padres and he’ll have a marked advantage on the ‘ol stat sheet: in 11 starts against San Diego Jon is 5-2 with a 2.15 ERA. He matched up against Richard in San Diego and did not allow a Padre to score while only giving up 4 hits. Maybe
Christian Villanueva will like the air in Colorado enough to do more damage against the Rocks? (lol, not in lineup...)
Tonight’s game starts up at 5:40 PM PST and it’ll be a cool 57 degrees in Denver. Let’s hope the Padres will give the Rockies a cold reception tonight!
