That was fun, right?

A thrilling win last night thanks to the bat of Christian Villanueva will bring us into today’s game featuring staff ace Clayton Richard on the mound against the Rockies in game 3 of the 4 game set. Richard (0-0, 1.29 ERA) performed well in his Opening Day start, holding the Brewers to just 1 run on 6 hits. You’ll remember that game as a loss in extras. The stats tell different tales of how Clayton will fare today: in 4 starts last year against the Rockies he was 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA though most of the damage was done in Colorado. At home Richard boasts a 3.20 ERA in 72 starts.

Thanks to a 3 home run night Christian Villanueva will get the start at 3rd today and hope to do more damage to a Rockies team sending out their own ace in Jon Gray.

Gray (0-1, 6.75 ERA) did not have as auspicious an Opening Day, lasting only 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits against the D-Backs. Jon does sport a solid record in Petco Park and against the Padres, however. Gray boasts a 4-2 2.40 ERA record overall when facing the Padres and did very well in his solitary appearance in San Diego last year, allowing a measly run on 5 hits in 6 innings with 8 punchouts.

The Padres can guarantee a series split with another victory tonight. Here’s to number 2 for the season!
