The present is always dismal, so that’s why I focus on the past. This also applies to baseball, I guess.

  • Former and current teammates Cameron Maybin and Odrisamer Despaigne both turn 31 today. Together again in Miami this season, they previously played together with the Padres in 2014 and ‘15.
  • Three-time Padres reliever Carlos Reyes was born this day in 19nice. He signed with the Pads before ‘98, pitched for ‘em, headed to the Red Sox midseason, came back for all of ‘99, went to the Phillies the next year, got waived partially through that season, and yeah, you know who nabbed him.
  • This day in 1981, the Padres released Dave Cash. A three-time All-Star in the mid-’70s with both Pennsylvania teams, he had been a shell of himself in 1980, his lone season in San Diego. After his release, Cash did not sign with another team, and five years later he received two Hall of Fame votes.
