A long-awaited return will finally happen 2 years later: Tyson Ross will make his return to the Petco Park mound in tonight’s action against the Rockies.
A stellar Spring Training showed that Ross still has the stuff to compete in the bigs and he’ll get the opportunity to bring back those 2014 All-Star vibes to a Padres team in need of solid pitching and still in search of that vaunted first win. In 15 innings of spring action Ross only allowed 5 earned runs and 10 hits while striking out 11. He’ll have to keep the Rockies bats at bay tonight after their 3 HR performance in last night’s win against the Friars; in 11 games and 9 starts Ross is 0-5 with a 3.44 ERA when facing Colorado.
The Rockies will send Kyle Freeland to the mound tonight. The 2nd-year Rockie pitcher and 2014 first round pick will look to improve on a rookie campaign that saw him tie the ML lead in wins and rank 3rd among rookies with 156 innings pitched. In his rookie season Freeland did not fare too well against San Diego, going 0-1 in 4 appearances and 2 starts with a 5.40 ERA.
In other news the Padres did do a little roster shuffling to get Ross a spot for the start tonight: Allen Cordoba has been placed on the 60-day DL (concussion) and Kyle McGrath will be shuttled down to El Paso.
Tonight’s game picks up at 7:10 PM Left Coast Time. Let’s get that first win, Padres!
