Padres Preview & News: 04/24 @ Rockies

Eric Lauer will get his first MLB start in Colorado tonight.

Before we get to tonight’s preview let’s touch on some roster moves and news.

In roster news Eric Hosmer will be taking a leave of absence from the team and was placed on the Family Medical Leave list. One can only hope the emergency isn’t too serious for Eric and his family.

In order to make room for another Eric on the roster a spot had to be freed up and that has been accomplished by designating Buddy Baumann for assignment. The lefty Baumann did not have the greatest showing in his extremely limited one game appearance back on the 11th against these Rockies; he surrendered 5 runs on 2 hits (2 of those runs earned) with 2 walks. You might remember that as the fight game. He’ll now be up for grabs and could very possibly end up back in El Paso should no team make a claim on the 30-year-old.

If you don’t already know tonight will be the debut of aforementioned lefty Eric Lauer. Gaslamp Ball’s own Roy Thomasson wrote up more about the lefty that you should totally read here.

Taking on the newest addition to the Padres roster will be Kyle Freeland (0-3,5.85 ERA). Freeland’s season has been rough so far; the last time the Padres saw Kyle he surrendered 5 hits and 2 dingers en route to a 8-4 win for the Friars. Freeland is 0-2 with a inflated 5.79 ERA in 3 games and 2 starts against San Diego. Due to Hosmer taking leave the Padres will be short two hot hitters in Colorado; Christian Villanueva will get another night off to rest the hamstring.

Let’s see if the squad can make it 2 in a row! Tonight’s game starts up at 5:40 PM PST.
