The Padres will end up back at the scene of the scrap in Colorado for yet another 3 game set. This will be the last time we’ll have to stare at Bud Black and co. until mid-May.
Bryan Mitchell will start in tonight’s game. I’m not sure if he’s going to throw at any Rockies or if he’s even capable of doing so with accuracy. But I digress; the righty has had an absolute tough go to start the season, coming into tonight’s contest with a 0-2 5.03 ERA record. Mitchell’s last outing against the Dodgers wasn’t great, giving up 3 runs and 5 hits over 6 innings. Control has been by and large the biggest issue with Bryan Mitchell in the course of his short Padres career: he’s allowed 17 walks against only 7 strikeouts in 4 starts, 19 2⁄3 innings. The last time Mitchell faced off against tonight’s Colorado starter in Chad Bettis the former Yankee surrendered 5 runs in 5 innings.
Chad Bettis (3-0, 1.44 ERA) got the victory in that game, only giving up 2 runs in 5 innings on the way to a 7-4 win. Bettis has only gotten better since and has had plenty of help from his Rockies teammates: Bettis is unbeaten so far in his starts and is 2-0 with a minuscule 0.63 ERA in his last 2 games. The Padres will have to hope their bats can come up with some hits to send into the thin Colorado air and will have to do without Christian Villanueva tonight; he’s a late scratch with a tender hamstring.
