After last night’s billion to 3 loss against the visiting Dodgers, the Padres will send Bryan Mitchell to the mound to face off against another struggling pitcher in Alex Wood.
Mitchell (0-2, 5.27 ERA) did not do well in his last start against the Giants, going only 3 innings and giving up 3 runs on 4 hits while giving 5 free passes. All in all Bryan has been liberal in giving up free bases: in 13 2⁄3 innings Mitchell has allowed 14 walks, or just about a walk an inning. He’s also given up 15 hits in that time and will have to really dial in his curveball against a strong Dodgers lineup. Mitchell doesn’t have much of a history against the Dodgers; only a handful of this current Dodgers team faced Mitchell while he was a Yankee in 2016.
Alex Wood (0-2, 5.09 ERA) has had a different sort of luck. While opposing batters are only hitting .209 against him, the hits that Wood has allowed have eventually scored (10 out of 14 runners allowed). In Wood’s last outing against the A’s the lefty allowed 7 runs on 7 hits in 3 2⁄3 innings. Alex has been strong against the Friars, however: in 8 starts and 12 games Wood boasts a 2.62 ERA against San Diego. Some current Friars should have a chance to fare well against a struggling lefty: Hunter Renfroe hit .333 in 5 at-bats off of Wood last year and after being accused of stealing signs Jose Pirela hit .600 off of Wood in 5 at-bats. You might see another Villanueva bomb tonight; he hit 1 of his 4 bombs last year off of Alex Wood.
