The Padres made a couple of roster moves today. Outfielder Manuel Margot has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, and Franchy Cordero has been called up.
If you were watching the game last night, you may have seen Margot get hit by a pitch in the 9th inning. Unfortunately that resulted in bruised ribs and this DL trip, which we're all hoping will only have to last the minimum ten days. The pitcher, Rockies reliever Scott Orberg, hit Margot in his ribs on the left side, causing him to fall down in pain and exit from the game.
Margot has struggled a bit to start his 2018 season. In his first 11 games (all starts) he's batting just .159 with a .495 OPS.
The Padres hope Manny Margot can return in 10 days. Even if he hadn't gotten hurt, they would have activated Cordero this week, Green said.— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) April 11, 2018
As The Athletic's Dennis Lin reports, Cordero would have been activated soon anyway, with many speculating that Matt Szczur would have been the corresponding roster move in that case. Cordero made his MLB debut last season and played in 30 games through two stints with the big league club, slashing .228/.276/.424. He performed well in Spring Training this year but a groin injury kept him off the Opening Day roster. It'll be fun to see him back in the lineup for the Padres, starting today when he leads off in Colorado.
