It has already been a frustration season for us San Diego Padres fans as the team opened up with two games they very much COULD and SHOULD have won against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Tonight they'll try to stave off a season-opening sweep as they conclude the series at Petco Park.
Luis Perdomo gets his first start of the season, seeking his first career win against Milwaukee. The former Rule 5 Draft pick is entering his third year with the Padres. Over the last two years he's made four starts against the Brewers, going 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA.
Right fielder Hunter Renfroe will also be making his first start of the season tonight. Having been relegated to a platoon/bench role coming out of Spring, he'll will be looking to make the most out of tonight's opportunity. That may be easier for him with a lefty, Brent Suter, on the mound for the Brewers. Renfroe has a career .315 average against left-handers in his career (spanning just over one season), versus a .216 average against right-handers. Both of his monster home runs onto the roof of Petco Park's Western Metal Building were against lefties. Maybe we'll see a third one tonight.
Milwaukee's Suter made his first ever Opening Day roster this season after spending last season shuffling back and forth from the minors. In 22 appearances (14 starts) in 2017, he went 3-2 with a 3.42 ERA. Tonight will mark his first career appearance against the Padres.
