Joey Fuego will make his MLB debut on Tony Gwynn Opening Day.

Well, that didn’t take long.

The first flows of magma from the figurative hot talent volcano will touch down in Petco Park tonight as Joey Lucchesi will make his MLB debut in place of an injured Dinelson Lamet. Lucchesi will be the 2nd player overall and 1st pitcher from the 2016 draft class to reach the bigs (on Tony Gwynn Opening Day, no less).

Joey will get the nod thanks in no small part to his performance in Spring Training: the lefty held batters to a .128 average and only allowed 2 earned runs over the course of 11 23 innings with 9 punchouts. The Organizational All-Star was indeed stellar last year in stints with both Lake Elsinore and San Antonio, posting a 2.20 ERA for the season. Joey Fuego’s delivery has been described as “funky” by more than a few people and he’ll look to bring the funk tonight against the Brewers and an old friend on the mound.

Jhoulys Chacin will take the ball for the Brew Crew tonight. I don’t have to rehash too much about the righty, do I? Of course you remember him in a Padres uniform last year as the Opening Day pitcher. Of some interest, however, are the stats from the prior season. Chacin posted a 1.39 ERA while pitching in the confines of Petco Park last year. It’ll remain to be seen which Jhoulys will arrive for Milwaukee: the dominant Petco Park version or the 6.53 road ERA pitcher who is pitching an away game in San Diego.

Tonight’s action picks up at 7:10 PM Left Coast Time. Here’s hoping we take a win into the weekend!
