The 1st round, 25th overall pick of the 2016 San Diego Padres draft will get a start on the mound for the major league squad in Spring Training action tonight vs. NL rival San Francisco.

The 22-year-old left handed Eric Lauer has had a pretty impressive spring so far; while not as highly touted as Cal Quantrill or pegged as ready for MLB action as Joey Lucchesi, Lauer has done pretty well so far stat-wise (2.70 ERA in 3 games). In his 6.2 innings pitched so far Eric has punched out 6 and only given up 2 earned runs. Control is the name of Laurer’s game; some have likened him to former Friar Eric Stults.
Thanks to the day off yesterday camp news has been at a standstill. Only one move was made and it was relatively minor:
The #Padres have optioned C Luis Torrens to Double-A San Antonio. There are now 48 players in Major League Camp. #PadresST

The Rule 5 draft pick from last year showed that he needed more experience in the minors; his only playing time prior to his 2017 Padres campaign was in low-A. Luis Torrens will have plenty of time to develop into a possible backup role for Austin Hedges and will at minimum provide competition for other catchers in the Padres system such as Austin Allen, Luis Campusano, and Blake Hunt.
Today’s game starts up at 6:40 PM PST and will only be available on the radio.
