Seven former Padres born on January 8

From Dick Kelley to Jon Edwards, with a few more recognizable names in between

Los Angeles Dodgers v San Diego Padres

words

Dick Kelley, 1940

Kelley pitched for the Padres in 1969 and ‘71. I wrote more in depth about him on his birthday four years ago.

...Ready got the same treatment three years ago.

Brian Johnson, 1968

Brian Johnson

Johnson spent his first three major league seasons, 1994 through ‘96, as the Padres’ backup catcher. He seems like a really decent and interesting guy; I recommend reading this interview he did with his friend Jeff Pearlman.

Brian Boehringer, 1969

Brian Boehringer #37

nice

Mike Cameron, 1973

Los Angeles Dodgers v San Diego Padres

Like Kelly and Ready, I’ve already churned out an individual birthday post about Cameron, so I’ll spare us both me repeating myself.

Frenchy played (poorly) in 10 games for the 2014 Padres, his only major league action that season. He collected two singles in 24 at-bats with the big club, and spent the rest of the season in AAA El Paso, where he hit decently, made eight solid relief pitching appearances, and was the subject of one of Cody Decker’s best short films. I guess I could have saved typing all that since I just realized that I did a birthday post about him three years ago as well.

Jon Edwards, 1988

Arizona Diamondbacks v San Diego Padres

Edwards was one of the two players the Padres received from Texas in exchange for Will Venable. He looked good in 11 appearances with San Diego in late 2015, pitched only one minor league inning in 2016 thanks to injury, was released in Spring Training last year, and that’s all she wrote.

That’s all I wrote, too.
