AJ Preller’s busy weekend continues, as the Padres general manager has sent fan-favorite infielder Yangervis Solarte to Toronto, as first reported by Jeff Passan. Solarte, who had been with the team since he was acquired in July, 2014 from the Yankees in the first Chase Headley trade, was part of a glut of infielders on the current roster, a situation exacerbated by the second Chase Headley trade.
Solarte is under contract this season, with options for 2019 an ‘20. His departure clears a needed 40-man-roster spot. The Blue Jays are reportedly sending outfield prospect Edward Olivares and another, currently less significant piece to the Padres organization.
“In his time in San Diego, Yangervis endeared himself to Padres fans with his enthusiasm and love for the game; his personality and energy are infectuous” is the most cliche sentence anyone could possibly write, but every word of it is true. He will be missed.
