The Padres avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Cardinals yesterday as they wrapped up the second-to-last homestand of the season. Their postgame happy flight took them to Arizona, where they will face the Diamondbacks in a three-game set this weekend.
Jordan Lyles will make his second start for San Diego. Last Saturday in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Dodgers, he made his Padres debut, pitching 4 1/3 innings while allowing two runs on six hits and four walks. The right-hander has already faced the Dbacks three times this season as a relief pitcher for the Rockies. Unfortunately those outings were largely unsuccessful. In 5 1/3 total innings, he gave up five earned runs on 11 hits. He's always seemed to struggle against Arizona. In 16 career appearances (eight starts), he has a 1-6 record and 7.26 ERA.
Taking the mound opposite Lyles will be Patrick Corbin, who is facing the Padres for the 15th time (10th time as a starter) in his career. He's 5-5 with a 3.49 ERA in those appearances. That includes three starts this season in which he totaled 18 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) while going 2-1.
