Padres 1, Cardinals 3: Friars suffer another low-scoring loss

Can we go back to beating the Dodgers?

Again, it didn’t take much for the Padres to be edged away from a win. Dinelson Lamet was, for the most part, pretty on point today - but the San Diego bats were not. With 5 hits for each team the Cardinals managed to do just enough damage to take the W.

Lamet was throwing heat for six innings. Before he was pulled in the 7th, Lamet had 8 strikeouts and no runs allowed. In the 7th, he simply gave up a single and a home run, then walked the next batter. That was enough to put a pin in the night for Lamet, who would end up only giving up 3 total hits and 4 walks. He left things open for the Padres to win it.

Kirby Yates’ relief in the 8th allowed a single run on a sac fly, so the Padres had 2 runs to surmount, thanks to a solo HR from Yangervis Solarte in the 4th inning, his 16th of the season:

That put the Pads up 1-0, and Solarte almost looked disgusted with what he had done with the baseball.

Unfortunately, that would be the only offensive production from the Pads, with only 5 hits a piece from Carlos Asuaje, Hector Sanchez, Jabari Blash, and some self-serve from Lamet. The Pads left 8 on base and were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

The Friars will get one last chance today to avoid the long sweep, with Clayton Richard set to take the mound on his path to pitching 200 innings this season.
