The series between the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals continues tonight at Petco Park. The Cardinals have a 2-0 lead in the series going into tonight's game, the third in a four-game set between the two teams.
Dinelson Lamet will take the mound, making his first career appearance against the Cardinals. He was the hard luck loser his last time out, putting together a six-inning one-run performance against the Dodgers that was met with no run support from the Padres offense. While he had some rough outings earlier in the season, Lamet has been mostly effective over the last month and a half. In eight starts dating back to July 23rd, he's posted a 2.49 ERA while keeping opponents batting just .183 in that span.
Lamet's opponent, Jack Flaherty, gets his second Major League start tonight. He was less than impressive in his debut last Friday, lasting only four innings while giving up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk. But MLBPipeline.com has Flaherty ranked 3rd amongst all Cardinals prospects, and for good reason. In 25 starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season, he went 14-4 with a 2.18 ERA and 1.043 WHIP.
