Every game can’t be as easy as sweeping double-headers against the Dodgers. Today, the Cardinals brought their A-game and an ace performance, and poured some water on the Padres after the Friars’ hot weekend and 5th game in 70 hours.
Luis Perdomo was on it today, despite being credited with the L. He only allowed 2 runs in the 4th inning, a bases-loaded RBI-single which should have been perhaps only a lone run on a sac fly. Instead, Manuel Margot did the worst thing he could have done short of letting it bounce and roll into the wall - deflecting a ball he was tracking off his glove and allowing two runs to cross the plate.
The Padres never really gained any offensive momentum over 9 innings. Wil Myers collected 2 hits, and Margot had the other. Collectively, the Friars struck out 10 times, left 12 on base, but never had a single Padre in scoring position.
It could be worse though, the Friars could have been blown out 13-0 like another team from Southern California did today.
