The San Diego Padres play their penultimate game of the season today in San Francisco. They suffered a 0-8 loss in their series opener against the Giants last night as Jordan Lyles closed out his season on a low note. Hopefully Jhoulys Chacin will have more success this afternoon and the Padres offense can put up something other than a goose egg in the run column.
Chacin is not only making his final start of the season, but he could possibly be making his final appearance as a Friar. He'll become a free agent at the end of the season, though he has expressed an interest in returning next year. For the most part, he's been one of the more reliable pitchers on the staff this year for San Diego. In his 31 starts going into this game, he is 13-10 with a 3.98 ERA. That includes some good outings against the Giants, whom the Padres have generally played well against in 2017. Chacin pitched five previous times against San Francisco this year and boasts a 3-1 record and 2.83 ERA in those games.
While Chacin's future with the team is up in the air for now, today's opposing pitcher Matt Cain will definitely be making his final start in a Giants uniform, and in fact is final start in professional baseball. Just a few days ago, the 13-year veteran and lifetime Giant announced that he will retire at the end of the season. Today will notonly mark the final start of his career, but his first start since the end of August. He didn't get the decision in either of his appearances against San Diego this season, combining for 9 1/3 innings and five earned runs allowed. Career-wise, he's been a befit unlucky against the Padres, posting a 3.20 ERA but only going 8-14 in 38 games (37 starts).
