Fresh off a Saturday doubleheader sweep, the San Diego Padres will wrap up their series against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers this afternoon with a rubber game. It'll be the last time these two teams meet at Petco Park in 2017.
Jhoulys Chacin will get the ball for the Padres in the finale. He's been fantastic at Petco Park, posting a 1.85 ERA, which is the best home ERA of any starting pitcher this year. This will be his third time facing the Dodgers in San Diego, and fifth time facing them overall this season. He gave up nine earned runs on eight hits and only lasted 3 1/3 innings at Dodger Stadium on April 3rd to open up his 2017 slate. But he's pitched much better against them since then, combining for 15 1/3 innings and two runs allowed on 12 hits through the last three of those starts.
Alex Wood will take the mound for the Dodgers today, just over two months after he instigated some on-field drama at Petco Park. During his last start against the Padres he threatened to hit Jose Pirela after accusing him of stealing signs. The dust-up ultimately resulted in ejections for both team's managers, a suspension for Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, and fines for Wood and Padres manager Andy Green.
Wood ended up winning that game after throwing six innings of one-run ball with two hits allowed, three walks, and eight strikeouts. He also pitched a scoreless two-inning relief appearance against them on April 5th, his 2017 debut. Altogether he has a lifetime 3-1 record and 2.09 ERA in ten outings (six starts) against San Diego.
