After walking off on a Yangervis Solarte home run earlier this afternoon, the San Diego Padres will try to sweep today's doubleheader against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. On the hill in game 2 will be Jordan Lyles and Yu Darvish.
Lyles is making his Padres debut, and first start of the season, tonight. He pitched exclusively out of the bullpen for the Rockies for the first four months of the season before he was claimed off waivers by the Padres in August. He accumulated 46 2/3 relief innings for Colorado, posting a 6.94 ERA. After joining the Padres organization he made five starts for Triple-A El Paso, where he posted a 4.50 ERA, but pitched very well in his last three start, leading to his callup.
As a former Rockies pitcher, Lyles has plenty of experience pitching against the Dodgers. However, his career numbers against them are far from impressive. In 13 appearances (five starts) e is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA against them.
Darvish, acquired from the Rangers at the trade deadline last month, will be making his fifth start for the Dodgers tonight. He already faced the Padres once this season, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while issuing no walks and striking out six batters. That was only his second career start against San Diego. He won his first, pitching eight innings of two-run ball back in 2012, his first year in the big leagues.
Through 26 starts so far this season, Darvish is 8-10 with a 3.88 ERA. In four starts as a Dodger, he's 1-2 with a 3.13 ERA.
