Sometimes the dude on the mound against you is locked in. Sometimes they’re so locked in that you can’t figure out how to handle them after 4 at bats. Tonight, the Padres couldn’t overcome the challenge of getting the ball out of the infield.
The good
Jhoulys Chacin was pitching just great. He was out there for 5 innings, gave up only 1 earned run (a solo homer), maybe walked 4 but struck out 3. Relief from Buddy Baumann and Carter Capps (holy alliteration) was fine too, scoreless in fact. The Giants weren’t running up the score or anything tonight.
The bad
Phil Mason wasn’t exactly doing the struggling lineup any favors, and compared to his teammates in 2 innings managed to give up 2 earned runs, one of them a homer. Yangervis Solarte, Wil Myers, and Cory Spangenberg collected the 3 total hits for the team, but didn’t do much else (like score.)
The ugly
29 at bats, 14 ground outs, 4 pop outs, 5 strike outs, 4 left on base. The Padres lineup was d-e-a-d tonight. The weird sucky Florida humidity seemed to have followed the Friars, and so did the loss.
Tomorrow Luis Perdomo will get a shot to even things up, hopefully with some offense behind him.
