The San Diego Padres are finally back home after an 11-day road trip. They went 3-7 over the ten-game stretch away from Petco Park, which is good news for the Tank. Tonight they'll kick off a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies, with one of the newest Padres on the hill to get things started.
Travis Wood will be making his fourth ever start in Padres uniform. Since joining the team last month prior to the trade deadline, Wood hasn't done all that much to impress anyone. He had a decent Padres debut, going six innings and keeping the offense to two run to earn a win against the Pirates on July 28th. But in his two starts since then he combined for ten innings of work while giving up ten runs (nine earned) on 13 hits and six walks. Wood has faced the Phillies ten times in his career including six times as a starter. He's 1-1 with a 2.11 ERA in those appearances.
Taking the mound for the visiting team will be Jered Eickhoff, is in his third Major League season with the Phillies. He's already pitched against the Padres this year, putting together a scoreless five-inning performance in which Padres hitters were kept to five hits and one run while striking out eight times. That was his third winning decision in as many tries against the Padres through his three years in the Majors.
