Pirates 7, Padres 1: McCutchen launches broadside to sink Friars

On the upside, Dusty Coleman hit another homer.

The Padres simply could not contain Andrew McCutchen today, as he went yard three separate times off two different pitchers. Josh Bell joined in the party with a bomb of his own, while Jordy Mercer and Jose Osuna topped off the 7-1 slaughter with a pair of extra base hits. While both Manuel Margot and Jose Pirela got a double off of the Pirates, only Dusty Coleman managed to do any damage with his second career home run.

Clayton Richard looked pretty good through his first five innings, despite the early solo shot from McCutchen. But the sixth inning was his undoing, starting with a free pass to the man who had already homered off him. David Freese followed up with a single, and then Osuna hit a triple to score what would be the winning run. Mercer brought Osuna home with a single, and suddenly the Padres were down by a grand slam. The three homers McCutchen and Bell hit off Jose Torres in the eighth and ninth were inconsequential.

Tomorrow’s an off day, but rather than stew on a bad loss, just watch this amazing Pirela catch until the Twins come to town on Tuesday.
