Padres Preview: 07/21 @ Giants

The Padres and Giants continue the Battle of the Basement tonight, with the Padres up a game after winning last night's series opener. Trevor Cahill gets the ball opposite Jeff Samardzija in game 2.

Cahill, who has been the subject of much trade speculation lately, is looking for a repeat of his last start, also against the Giants. He went 6 2/3 innings, giving up only one run on eight hits and a walk, while collecting eight strikeouts.

Samardzija wasn't so successful pitching in that game. The Padres put up seven runs - all earned - on nine hits in six innings, giving Samardzija the loss. However he did refrain from walking a batter and he notched eight strikeouts as well in that outing. Overall the 2017 season has been rough on Samardzija. Sunday's loss against the Padres put him at 4-11 on the year after 19 starts. He'll try to avoid a 12th loss tonight.
