The bottom two NL West teams will meet up again, this time for a four-game set in San Francisco's AT&T Park. Tonight's series opener will pit veterans Jhoulys Chacin and Madison Bumgarner against each other on the mound, with the latter making his first home start since April.
Bumgarner returned last week from a three-month DL stint with a shoulder injury. His first start back, against the Padres at Petco Park last Saturday, had him go seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits and a couple of walks while striking out five. Before the dirt bike accident that resulted in his shoulder injury back in April, Bumgarner had gone 0-3 in four starts, despite a decent 3.00 ERA. One of those starts was also against the Padres, and like last week it was one of his better performances despite the resulting Giants loss. He threw eight innings of two-run ball but was saddled with the loss. The lefty has faced the Padres more than any other team in his career. In 30 appearances (29 starts) against them, he is 10-8 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.069 WHIP.
Chacin has plenty of experience against the Giants as well. In 18 career outings (17 starts) he's 7-6 with a 3.40 ERA and 1.171 WHIP. That includes three starts this season. His most recent, last Saturday opposite Bumgarner at Petco Park, was a six-inning three-run effort in which he gave up six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. He combined for 11 2/3 innings with three runs on eight hits in two starts against the Giants in April.
