Padres recall Franchy Cordero, option Jose Valdez. Also, bad news about Jarred Cosart

Bad news: Padres starting pitcher Jarred Cosart underwent arthroscopic surgery on his elbow and will miss the remainder of the season. Good news: centerfielder Franchy Cordero is back with the squad, and Jose Valdez went to El Paso to make room.

As AJ Cassavell hinted last night, Franchy Cordero has joined the team in Denver, and Jose Valdez has been optioned. With the expansive outfields in Colorado and the upcoming series in San Francisco, Cordero’s range and athleticism will be an asset, and his bat may be a boost to the lineup. Jose Valdez only made one appearance during his most recent call-up, pitching a scoreless inning last night in Colorado.

In other news around the organization, Jarred Cosart underwent his second elbow surgery in the last calendar year, as Dennis Lin announced in this tweet:

There are no initial reports regarding the nature of this procedure. His surgery last October removed “loose bodies” from the area. With the season lost to injury, the 27-year-old will be entering arbitration in 2018, so his future with the organization may be in jeopardy.
