After Hector Sanchez secured a win for the home team to even up the series last night at Petco Park, the Padres and Giants will play a rubber game this afternoon to close out the three-game set.

Vista High alum Trevor Cahill will take the mound to try to lead the Friars to a series win before they hit the road. He's pitched against the Giants 16 times in his career with a 6-5 record and 3.81 ERA. His last start against them was back in 2014 when he pitched for the Damondbacks, but he did make a few relief appearances against them last year as a Cub, totaling 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

Today's outing will be Cahill's tenth of the season and third since returning from the disabled list at the beginning of this month. He's coming off a bit of a rough start in Philadelphia, where he gave up four earned runs on six hits (three of which were homers) in five innings of work. However he didn't walk a batter and he notched eight strikeouts in his effort.

On the hill for San Francisco will be Jeff Samardzija, who has 13 career games (11 starts) against San Diego under his belt. In those games he is 7-2 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.138 WHIP. But the 2017 season hasn't been kind to him. Through his first 18 starts, he is 4-10 with a 4.58 ERA. That includes one start, a no-decision, against San Diego back in April. He threw seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk, with just one strikeout.
