There’s an ugly trend of Padres starters putting up a very crooked number in the first few innings. That unfortunate trend continued tonight, with the Padres hitting the road to Arizona to take the Diamondbacks.
The good: Hunter Renfroe homered! Twice! Our boy hit his 12th home run in the top of the 4th and 13th home run right at the end in the top of the 9th. Sadly, those would be the only two runs the Padres put together. But hey, they were good-looking runs:
With this dinger, @Hunter_Renfroe is now tied for the NL rookie lead in home runs. #VoteRenfroe

The bad: Five hits and two runs rarely wins a ballgame. Will Myers, Luis Torrens, Cory Spangenberg, and Renfroe were the only Friars to get a hit. The team combined for a crooked 13 strikeouts, were 0-for-4 with RISP and left 6 on base. Oh, the bullpen’s relief efforts were phenomenal by the way. Diaz, Quackenbush, Torres, and Buchter all combined for 10 strikeouts and only 2 hits.
The ugly: Dinelson Lamet noooooo. Despite two great starts against the Mets and the Cubs, Lamet was absolutely lit up tonight. In just three innings he had given up 5 hits but allowed 7 earned runs, walked 5, and gave up a homer. His ugliest inning was the 2nd, where he gave up a 2-run single and then a 3-run HR.
Not ideal for the kid, but only the first ‘earned’ loss from Lamet.
