Padres Preview: 06/27 vs. Braves

Jhoulys Chacin takes on rookie lefty Sean Newcomb as the Padres welcome the Braves to Petco Park

MLB: Kansas City Royals at San Diego Padres Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

After enjoying an off day at home yesterday, the San Diego Padres are back in action at Petco Park this evening, opening up a series against the visiting Alanta Braves.

First up on the mound tonight will be Jhoulys Chacin, who's had a decent month so far. He's put together four quality starts while going 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA in June. He's struggled a bit against the Braves in the past, going 1-3 in five starts all-time. One of those starts was the opener of the four-game series at SunTrust Park earlier this season, which the Braves swept. Chacin gave up four runs (three earned) in five innings. He holds a career 4.32 ERA and 1.880 WHIP against them.

Atlanta will counter tonight's Padres veteran presence on the mound with rookie southpaw Sean Newcomb, who is appearing in just his fourth Major League game. Newcomb, who currently stands as MLBP Pipeline's 69th-ranked overall prospect, made his big league debut earlier this month. In his three starts since then, he's thrown 18 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on 12 hits, with seven walks and 13 strikeouts.
