Last night the Padres beat the Tigers 1-0 in a game in which they were outhit three to two. I recalled a couple games a few years ago in which the Padres won despite getting one hit, but still thought that winning with two or fewer had to be fairly rare. I fired up the trusty Baseball Reference Play Index, and sure enough, they've only done it 14 times in their 49 seasons. Over half of those games (eight) ended with a score of 1-0.
Out of additional curiosity, I decided to see how many times they've recorded two or fewer hits and lost the game, which is the much more logical outcome. I knew they've been no-hit nine times, and lost all of those, so that wasn't a good start. It turns out they've lost 122 such games, giving them a record of 14-122 (.102), which is better than I thought it would be.
