Welcome to day 2 of the MLB draft. How did you think yesterday’s drafting went for the Padres? Yesterday the Padres selected 3 players in the first couple of rounds and today they will selecting 8 more in rounds 3-10. Last year the Padres got some great finds with their first couple of picks on day 2 (Mason Thompson and Joey Lucchesi) as well as last one other fast riser in round 9 (Jesse Scholtens).
It would be fun to share with you a list of players recently drafted by the Padres in round 3-10 that have made a contribution for the club, but that list is limited to Kevin Quackenbush (2011 8th round). Part of that is because of the trades Jed Hoyer, Josh Byrnes and A.J. Preller made in order to compete over the years. Matt Andriese (2011 3rd round), Matt Wisler (2011 7th round), Mallex Smith (2012 5th round) and Corey Kluber (2007 4th round) were all drafted by the Padres. You can definitely find talent in these rounds. In fact, Wil Myers was a 3rd round draft pick by the Royals in 2009 and Clayton Richard was an 8th round pick by the White Sox in 2005. Definitely don’t sleep on these picks.
The drafting starts today at 10 am PT.
