The Padres opened up their homestand last night with a strong victory over the Kansas City Royals. Veteran righty Jhoulys Chacin put forth a great performance to earn the win. Today, Padres rookie Miguel Diaz will make his first ever start in the big leagues as San Diego looks to clinch the series.
Prior to this season, Diaz had never played above Single-A ball. The Rule 5 Draft pick, has been pitching out of the bullpen all season, seeing limited success. Now, with Jarred Cosart on the disabled list as of this week, Diaz gets the spot start. In 21 relief appearances this season for the Padres, he' posted a 7.50 ERA. However, since May 6th he has a much more respectable 2.79 mark. Though he has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen at the Major League level, Diaz spent most of last season as a starter for the Brewers' Class A affiliate.
On the mound for Kansas City will be a familiar face. Former Friar Ian Kennedy will take the hill as a visitor, seeking his first win in his 11th start of the season. He is 0-6 in his first ten attempts, pitching to the tune of a 5.33 ERA. The veteran righty, who signed a five-year contract with the Royals after parting ways with the Padres in 2015, has a 7-2 record and 3.05 ERA all-time against his former team.
