Nationals 3, Padres 0: Strasburg blanks Friars

The SDSU alumnus beat up San Diego.

The Padres didn’t have to face Max Scherzer today, but they did even worse against Stephen Strasburg, who shut them out for seven innings. Hunter Renfroe, Yangervis Solarte, and Allen Cordoba put up a measly three singles against the Aztec star. And not a single Friar reached base against the Washington bullpen pairing of Matt Albers and Koda Glover. Clayton Richard mostly kept the Nationals to singles, but three of the ten hits he gave up were for extra bases, and two of those stung.

The Nats got the only run they would need in the third. Strasburg led off with a single up the middle, and Jayson Werth put him 90 feet from home with a double to left. A ground out from Bryce Harper plated Strasburg. DC piled on in the sixth. Anthony Rendon led off with a double, and Michael Taylor went yard off Richard to send the Padres down by three. Craig Stammen miraculously tossed two hitless innings, but the Friars couldn’t touch the Washington bullpen.

Jhoulys Chacin will try to avoid a sweep when he takes on former Friar farmhand Joe Ross at 10:35 tomorrow morning.
