Luis Sardiñas is headed to the Orioles just after being designated for assignment.
Luis served as a backup/defensive sub for Erick Aybar after being claimed by the Padres from the Mariners last year. Many believed A.J. Preller saw promise in the now-24 year old Venezuelan from his time in the Texas system while Preller served there. While Luis showed some promise in the small sample size last year for the Padres, this year has been less kind to the formerly high-touted prospect. Sardy was unable to fend off free-agent signing Erick Aybar for the full-time shortstop position and has been used sparingly as a late inning defensive sub/backup for the aging Aybar. Sardiñas hasn’t been able to replicate last year’s success at the dish either, hitting a paltry .163 in 49 at-bats for the Padres.
The Luis Sardiñas highlight for many Padres fans will probably be watching him pitch a clean inning in relief during a 10-1 laugher against the D-Backs.
The writing may have been on the wall for Sardiñas after the Padres made a claim on Chase d’Arnaud from the waiver wires. With the claim on Sardiñas the Padres have another free spot on their 40-man roster to add another waiver-wire pickup or possibly one of the youngsters on the farm.
