The Padres have announced a roster move that is likely to make fans happy. Jered Weaver is heading to the 10-day disabled list and right-handed pitcher, Jose Valdez, has been brought up from Triple-A El Paso.
Just a little while ago, Twitter was abuzz with the news that Valdez was at Petco Park. Many assumed the corresponding move would have something to do with Weaver. Fans have been calling for the Padres to cut ties with Weaver for weeks now, and last night’s disastrous outing, during which he was booed off the mound after failing to make it out of the first inning, may have been the final straw.
According to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the cause of this DL trip is left hip inflammation, although it might be difficult to find anyone in San Diego (or any baseball fans anywhere) who will believe that. Regardless, Weaver will definitely miss at least one start - and likely much more than that.
Buying time to decide his future. Will be a surprise if he makes another start for #Padres. https://t.co/12OwziaxYU

Who will take Weaver’s place in the rotation is still up in the air, especially with Trevor Cahill also on the disabled list for the time being (though hopefully he won’t miss more than one more start).
Padres have placed Jered Weaver on 10-day DL with left hip inflammation. Jose Valdez is up. Andy Green says Weaver's spot is TBD right now.

Valdez will join a Padres relief corps that is in desperate need of, well, some relief. The Padres claimed Valdez from the Angels just a couple of weeks ago. He made ten relief appearances for the Salt Lake Bees and three for the El Paso Chihuahuas, throwing a combined 15 2/3 innings and allowing ten runs on 14 hits and six walks while collecting 18 strikeouts.
