After three and a half weeks on the disabled list, Padres right-hander Jarred Cosart was activated this morning prior to the game in Chicago. In a corresponding roster move, reliever Kevin Quackenbush was optioned to Triple-A El Paso.
Cosart was placed on the DL on April 19th with a right hamstring strain. Before returning to the big league club, he made two rehab appearances - one for Class-A Lake Elsinore where he went two innings and allowed one run, and one for El Paso where he threw four scoreless.
Cosart appeared in three games for the Padres before landing on the DL. After making his 2017 debut as a reliever, he made two starts. Altogether he threw a total of 8 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and six walks. With the Padres rotation currently full and healthy, Cosart will go back to the bullpen to act as a long reliever, though Padres manager Andy Green didn’t rule out the possibility of seeing him start again this season.
As for Quackenbush, who still has Minor League options, he returns to El Paso for the fourth time since the start of the season. He’s appeared in six games for the Padres, totaling 7 1/3 innings with three earned runs allowed on seven hits and three walks. He’s also notched ten big league strikeouts this season.
