The Padres will go for a sweep this afternoon against the visiting Giants, following two very good baseball games to open up their 2017 home slate. Clayton Richard gets the nod in the series finale opposite Johnny Cueto.
Richard was brilliant in his 2017 debut last week at Dodger Stadium. He pitched eight scoreless innings, keeping the Dodgers to five hits and two walks while striking out five. He has faced the Giants 17 times (14 as a starter) in his career, which is the third most of all Major League teams. He's 6-5 with a 3.87 ERA and 1.372 WHIP in those outings.
Cueto has pitched 12 times (all starts) against the Padres, posting a 2.96 ERA and 1.059 WHIP while going 7-4. Today he will try to rebound from his first start of the season, when he went five innings against the Diamondbacks. Though he did end up with the winning decision, he gave up four runs on six hits and a couple of walks.
