The Padres open a three-game series in San Francisco to close out the month of May. The Giants have been one of the bigger surprises in the league, not for success but for futility. Nearly a month in to the season and they find themselves looking up at the rest of the NL West (including the fourth place Padres).
Luis Perdomo will make his third start of the season tonight. In his two previous starts, he hasn’t made it through the sixth inning, leaving the game after 83 pitches in each. The bullpen isn’t as thin as it was a couple of days ago, but a good start for him would be a nice sign moving forward.
The Giants send Jeff Samardzija to the mound. Once considered a potential ace, “Shark” has struggled mightily this season. The power righty has been susceptible to the long ball, but pitching in spacious AT&T Park with the cool, damp evening bay air may work in his favor. He’s been as durable as any pitcher in the league, so don’t expect to see him chased early based on pitch count. The loss of Madison Bumgarner only makes the Giants need Samardzija that much more.
The Padres took the previous series in Petco, so you know the Giants will want to even the score. Even if this is a “tank” season, I still want to see the Padres win every series against our division rivals. As a Padre fan living in Giants territory, I really would like to be able to hold my head high with the SD on my cap, knowing that this team of nobodys was better than the “three time world champs” on this day.
