Padres Preview 4/18: Jarred Cosart makes his second start against Shelby Miller and the D-Backs

Cosart will try to get the Padres back on track after a 4-game sweep and a red-eye flight back from Atlanta.

One red-eye flight back home from a swept series later, the Padres find themselves back home in Petco Park tonight against (co)NL West-leading Arizona.

Taking the mound for San Diego is Jarred Cosart in another spot start in place of the injured Luis Perdomo. Cosart held his own against the Rockies (filling in for Trevor Cahill) in his first start of the season, keeping the Rox bats silent in 4 frames of action and sporting a new slider offering (thrown 11 times). Cosart could maintain a spot in the rotation with another solid showing against the Diamondbacks; Cosart also hasn’t earned a pitcher win since September 24th, 2015. The backsliding Padres will also have to hope for some offense: the Pads were outscored 23-8 against the Braves in their home opener in brand-new SunTrust Park.

Taking the mound for Arizona is inconsistent Shelby Miller, who in his last appearance held the Giants scoreless in almost 5 innings before unraveling and ultimately allowing three runs on seven hits in a loss. Arizona is encouraged that Miller could turn it around at any time after an encouraging Spring Training. Miller sports a 1-2 record against San Diego, though Arizona has beaten the Padres in the last 4 consecutive games and was 10-9 against the Friars last year.

Here’s hoping the Padres are able to wake the bats after a late flight and shell Shelby. First pitch for tonight’s contest is scheduled at 7:10 PM Left Coast Time.
