SD 4, ATL 5: Friars can’t avoid the four-game sweep

Still, as always, some good stuff happened.

The grand opening series in the Atlanta Brave’s new SunTrust Park was full of a lot of firsts. Unfortunately, the first sweep of this ballpark would be to the detriment of the San Diego Padres. The Padres have taken virtually every opening day game of new ballparks they’ve had the chance to play in. But, the tank/bank 2017 Padres couldn’t fly home with at least a win in the series this time.

Jered Weaver took the mound and was squeezed for 3 runs and 7 hits. His first (unearned) run in the bottom of the second, his other 2 from a Freddie Freeman 2-run HR in the bottom of the third.

In the spirit of ‘firsts’, the first run of the day came from a Yangervis Solarte, an RBI-single in the top of the first to score Manuel Margot. Another first was Allen Cordoba’s first major league home run, a solo shot into center-ish field on a 3-1 count. Cordoba’s home run would pin the Padres down a run, 2-3 at the 7th.

To tie things up, Austin Hedges hit a home run of his own, a two-run blast that scored Ryan Schimpf, who (you guessed it) reached first on a four-pitch walk. That’s Austin’s second home run now, and it pulled the Padres ahead 4-3 in the 8th.

The Pads battled back and kept things tight until the eighth inning where Freddie Freeman would come back to burn Ryan Buchter with a solo HR. In the bottom of the 9th, with the bases loaded, Dansby Swanson snuck a line drive into left field that Cordoba couldn’t glove, and the Braves took the game 4-5 and the series with it.

The four-game series curse begins.
