Unfortunately the Padres couldn’t keep the magic of the cycle going into game 2 of their series against the Rockies, losing 3-2 in a game of home runs. Today they’ll try to secure a series win before leaving Coors Field and continuing their road trip.
Luis Perdomo was supposed to pitch in today’s rubber match, but last night he was scratched from his scheduled start and today he will be placed on the 10-day disabled list. In his place, Zach Lee will take the mound against the Rockies. Lee was drafted by the Dodgers in the first round in 2010. He has earned the honors of being named the Dodgers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year twice in his career (2013 and 2015) and was called up several times in 2015. He only took the mound for the Dodgers once, though. His Major League debut on July 25th, 2015, a spot start against the Mets, ended up being his only appearance in the big leagues until now. He gave up seven runs on 11 hits and a walk in just 4 2/3 innings.
A few days ago when Trevor Cahill was placed on the disabled list, the Padres called up Lee with the possibility of taking his spot in the rotation while he was out, but Jarred Cosart ended up getting the spot start for Cahill and now Lee will be taking Perdomo’s start. Hopefully this big league outing will go better than his last.
Rockies starter Kyle Freeland has also only had one Major League outing prior to today, but his was much more recent. Freeland, a Denver native, made his debut last Friday at Coors Field, throwing six solid innings of one-run ball. He kept the Dodgers to only four hits and two walks while striking out six batters en route to a win.
