Though it might be hard to beat the excitement of last night’s series opener in Colorado, the Padres will try tonight in game 2. Veteran righty Jered Weaver will take the mound, making his second start of the season, opposite Rockies rookie Antonio Senzatela.
Despite a lengthy career in the big leagues so far, Weaver has very limited experience (21 at-bats’ worth) pitching against the current Rockies roster, and furthermore zero experience pitching at Coors Field. He struggled in his season debut last week against the Dodgers, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks, all while failing to throw a single pitch above 85 mph.
Senzatela’s season debut was also his Major League debut, and he couldn’t have hoped for a better outing. The young right-hander threw five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and three walks while collecting six strikeouts. His 2016 was spent at Double-A Hartford, where he posted a 1.82 ERA and went 4-1 through seven starts before being sidelined by injury for the remainder of the season. But he impressed enough in Spring Training this year to earn a spot in the Rockies rotation.
