Taking the mound for San Diego for the first time this Spring will be Clayton Richard. The left-hander has already locked up one of the Padres' starting spots, barring disaster, and is expected to start the season at the top of the rotation. After returning to San Diego last August, Richard made 11 appearances (nine starts) for the team. He became a relatively reliable addition to the pitching staff, going 3-3 with a 2.52 ERA and 1.528 WHIP through those last two months of the season. The Padres re-signed Richard to a one-year $1.75 million deal in December and this year he'll provide some (hopefully) dependable veteran experience amidst a largely youthful roster.
Cleveland will counter today with righty Trevor Bauer, who will be making his second appearance of the Spring. Last Wednesday against the Mariners he threw three solid innings, giving up four hits but no runs, striking out one batter, and not allowing a walk.
