The Padres got split decisions yesterday on Split Squad Sunday, beating the Cubs 9-4 on the road and falling to the Rockies 4-1 at home. Today they'll take on their facility-mates, the Seattle Mariners, in an afternoon matchup at Peoria Stadium.
We should expect to see several pitchers get some playing time today, but starting things off for the Padres will be Matt Magill. San Diego signed Magill out of free agency to a minor league contract in January. He's appeared in two previous games this Spring, totaling 3 2/3 scoreless innings with only two hits allowed, two walks issued, and one hit batsman.
Also scheduled to pitch for the Friars today are bullpen candidates Brandon Maurer, Ryan Buchter, Brad Hand, and Carter Capps. While Maurer is currently slated as the Padres closer going into the regular season, Capps could make things interesting by providing some competition for the role. The right-hander, known for his funky, illegal-looking delivery, has spent the last year recovering from Tommy John surgery, and today will be his 2017 debut. He was acquired by the Padres last year in the Andrew Cashner trade with the Marlins.
