In what will be another audition for the Padres rotation, Christian Friedrich will take the mound against division rival Arizona in a road game at Talking Stick.
The left-handed Friedrich (5-12, 4.80 ERA last season) was serviceable for the Padres last season and will look to keep a spot in the rotation among a crowded field of arms the Padres have brought in to compete. Other pitchers slated to make appearance against the Snakes are Kevin Quakenbush, Miguel Diaz, and Jon Edwards, all of whom are also competing for the Padres bullpen. Among those in consideration for bullpen duties is Most Interesting Padre Christian Bethancourt, who did pitch a clean half inning.
Facing the Padres is Archie Bradley, who much the same was serviceable for the ‘do your best 2015 Padres imitation’ Diamondbacks last year (8-9, 5.02 ERA). The Diamondbacks are more concerned about their de-facto ace Zack Greinke’s return after a disappointing season and who will back up 1st base stalwart Paul Goldschmidt. The Padres will also see old friend Fernando Rodney donning the tilted snake cap for Arizona in his first Spring Training outing.
Today’s action will start at 12:10 PM Left Coast Time.
