The Padres are back in Peoria this afternoon. Rotation hopeful Trevor Cahill will get the start against the visiting Kansas City Royals.
In three outings so far this Spring, Cahill has thrown a combined eight innings and kept opponents to two earned runs on three hits and four walks while collecting six strikeouts. The San Diego native signed a one-year, $1.75 million deal with the Padres in January with the hopes of earning a rotation spot for the 2017 season, but the competition amongst his fellow pitchers at camp remains steep.
Kansas City, which plays split squad games this afternoon, so good the ball to Josh Staumont in Peoria. The 23-year-old right-hander was drafted in the second round by the Royals in 2015. He came to camp this Spring as a non-roster invitee. In two prior appearances, he's pitched three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks.
