Padres 9, Giants 5: Blash goes yard in first win of spring

And Austin Hedges is still hotter than Peoria in July.

After a few lackluster starts to spring training, the Padres gave the Giants a serious beatdown this afternoon. Jhoulys Chacín and Keith Hessler tossed a couple solid innings each and only one nobody imploded. The Friars took advantage of a few errors to pick up three unearned runs, but the bulk of the scoring came from some sweet swinging by Jabari Blash. Last year’s most exciting Rule 5 pick went 2-for-2 with 5 RBI and a gorgeous three-run bomb to left field.

Meanwhile, Austin Hedges got a day off as backstop, but stayed in the lineup as designated hitter. He continued his domination of Cactus League pitching, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and a double off Madison Bumgarner. That puts his batting average at .750, and he has yet to strike out.

Tomorrow’s a split-squad day, with one squad hosting the A’s and the other traveling to Talking Stick to take on the Rockies. Both games start at 12:10 PM.
