Padres Preview 2/27: Tyrell Jenkins debuts against the Angels

The offseason waiver pickup gets the ball against the Halos in Tempe.

After an inauspicious start to spring in the form of back to back pummelings against former natural rival Mariners, the Padres will leave home field in Peoria to face the Angels in Tempe.

Of particular interest is the pitcher taking the mound for the Padres: Tyrell Jenkins. The former Reds (by way of Texas and Atlanta) right hander is one of the many arms A.J. Preller has plucked off waivers and free agency to compete for a spot in the makeshift Padres rotation. Tyrell went 2-4 with a 5.88 ERA in 14 appearances last year with the Braves with command issues jarring his game. Manager Andy Green is hoping the former Top-100 prospect can get back to what works best for the young pitcher.

Via Andy Green:

His delivery, when he was finishing up with the Braves last year, was very bottled up. It was an attempt to look a little bit like Clayton Kershaw, and he wasn’t pulling it off.

Also making starts today are Wil Myers and Erick Aybar, who will face his former team.

Making the start for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of the greater Los Angeles Area is JC Ramirez. The Angels will be experimenting with Ramirez as a starter, as he has exclusively been used out of the bullpen and hasn’t started a game at any level since 2011. JC is coming off a career season with the Halos (via the Reds), boasting a 2.91 ERA in 46 appearances for Anaheim. The Angels are coming off a win yesterday against the A’s which featured former Padre Bud Norris making the start.

Today’s game starts at 12:10 PM Left Coast Time and will be on Fox Sports San Diego as the first televised Spring Training game for the Pads. You can otherwise catch the action on 94.9 FM.
