Mariners 13, Padres 2: Good thing there’s no Vedder Cup this year

The Padres have not started spring on a high note.

I didn’t tune in to today’s spring training game, and it sounds like spending the afternoon playing Rise of the Tomb Raider instead was the right call. A bunch of non-roster invitees and some guy named Zach Lee that A.J. Preller claimed off waivers in December gave up thirteen runs. If you’re confused and think you’re reading a really late recap for Saturday’s game, you should know that the Padres only picked up two runs.

There’s not a lot nice to say about the offense either, as they went a pretty paltry 8-for-34 while drawing a disappointing number of walks at — let me check my notes — zero. On the good side, they put the ball in play well, only striking out four times. And a couple young middle infielders had good days, as both Carlos Asuaje and Luis Sardiñas went 1-for-2 with a RBI. Manuel Margot showed the most power with a double to left field. That’s about all you missed if you spent your Sunday afternoon not muttering to yourself “2019 2019 2019 2019”.

The team heads to Tempe tomorrow to take on the Angels at 12:10 PM.
